Automation and the UK labour market: Jobs in the 4IR

This event will take place in Parliament on 5 June 2018 (14:30-16:00) in the Atlee Suite, Portcullis House

Over the next five years, new products and services harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced robotics will continue to transform industries across every sector of the economy.

This will make it possible to automate a whole range of tasks formerly resistant to technological change. Some fear that this will mean mass unemployment in industries like transport and logistics due to driverless vehicles, while others talk about lawyers and doctors basing decisions on analysis performed by AI – people working alongside machines rather than being replaced by them.

In the context of this widely anticipated surge in automation, our panellists will be asked to consider how the UK labour market is changing as a result of new technologies and business models.

The discussion will focus on:

  • Which parts of the labour market are at most risk from technological change?
  • Does mass automation have to mean mass unemployment?
  • How can we help workers at risk from automation transition into new roles?
  • Should we be looking for a way to tax “automated” work?

The panel will consist of:

  • Rt Hon Esther McVey MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
  • Ian Stewart, Chief UK Economist for Deloitte
  • Speaker from a think-tank or similar external organisation (TBC)
  • Opposition MP or Peer
